Rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is surgery that changes the shape of the nose by modifying the bone or cartilage. Rhinoplasty is one of the most common types of plastic surgery.

Why are rhinoplasty performed?

People undergo rhinoplasty to repair their nose after an injury, to correct breathing problems, because of a birth defect, or because they are unhappy with the appearance of their nose.

The possible changes that your surgeon can make to your nose through rhinoplasty include:

– A change in size
– An angle change
– Straightening of the bridge
– Remodeling the tip
– Narrowing of the nostrils

If you want to perform rhinoplasty to improve your appearance instead of your health, you must wait until your nasal bone has fully grown. For girls, this is around 15 years old. The children’s could continue to grow until they are a little older. However, if you are receiving surgery due to a respiratory impediment, rhinoplasty can be performed at a younger age.

Rhinoplasty risks

All surgeries carry some risks, including infections, bleeding, or a bad reaction to anesthesia. Rhinoplasty may also increase your risk of:

. Respiratory difficulties
. Nasal hemorrhages
. A numb nose
. An asymmetric nose
. Scars

Sometimes, patients will not be satisfied with the results of the surgery. If you want a second surgery, you must wait until your nose is completely healed before having surgery again. This may be the first year.
Smokers have more difficulty curing themselves from rhinoplasty, as cigarettes slow down the recovery process. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, causing less oxygen and blood to reach the healing tissues. Stopping smoking before and after surgery can help the healing process.

Rhinoplasty procedure

Rhinoplasty can be performed in a hospital, or in an ambulatory surgical center. Our doctor will use local or general anesthesia. If it is a simple procedure, you will receive local anesthesia in the nose, which will also numb your face. You can also get medications through an intravenous line that can stun you, but you will still be awake.

Once you are numb or unconscious, the surgeon will make cuts between or inside your nostrils. The skin is separated from its cartilage or bone and then remodeling begins. If your new nose needs a small amount of additional cartilage, the doctor can remove something from your ear or inside your nose. If you need more, you can get an implant or a bone graft. A bone graft is an additional bone that is added to the bone of the nose.

The procedure usually takes between one and two hours. If the surgery is complex, it may last longer.

How to recover after rhinoplasty

After the surgery, the doctor can place a plastic or metal splint on the nose. The splint will help your nose retain its new shape while it heals. They can also place nasal pouches or splints inside the nostrils to stabilize the septum, which is the part of the nose between the nostrils.

You will be monitored in a recovery room at least a few hours after surgery. If all is well, it will come out later that day. You will need someone to take you home because anesthesia will still affect you. If it is a complicated procedure, you may have to stay in the hospital for a day or two.

To reduce bleeding and swelling, you should rest with your head elevated above your chest. If your nose is swollen or full of cotton, you may feel somewhat congested. People usually leave splints and bandages in place for a week after surgery. You may have absorbable sutures, which means they dissolve and do not require removal. If the stitches are not absorbable, you will need to come back a week after the surgery to remove the stitches.

For a few days after your surgery, you may experience drainage and bleeding. A drip pad, which is a piece of gauze stuck under the nose, can absorb blood and mucus. The doctor will tell you how often to change your drip pad.

You may have headaches, your face will feel swollen, and the doctor may prescribe pain medication.

Our doctor can tell you to avoid the following for a few weeks after your surgery:

Running and other strenuous physical activities

Swim

Blow nose

Excessive chewing

Laughing, smiling or other facial expressions that require a lot of movement

Pull the clothes over the head

Place resting glasses on the nose

Brush your teeth hard

Take special care with sun exposure. Too much sun could permanently discolor the skin around your nose.
Normally we can return to work or activities within a week.

Rhinoplasty can affect the area around the eyes, so you may have temporary numbness, swelling, or discoloration around the eyelids for a few weeks. In rare cases, this can last six months, in addition to which a slight swelling could persist even more. You can apply cold packs or ice packs to decrease discoloration and swelling.

Follow-up and postoperative control is important after rhinoplasty. Be sure to keep your appointments and follow our doctor’s instructions.

What results can be expected from rhinoplasty?

Although rhinoplasty is a relatively safe and easy procedure, healing may take a while. The tip of the nose is especially sensitive and may remain numb and swollen for months. You may feel recovered in a few weeks, but some effects may remain for months.

The usual in these interventions is that a full year elapses before you can fully appreciate the final result of your surgery.
